New project launched in Lanarkshire - How does your toddler communicate?

NHS Lanarkshire speech and language therapist Anne McDade, said: “The project will monitor children’s communication at an important stage of their development and if any problems are identified will insure they are treated quickly"

Anyone who wishes to ensure their toddler’s communication skills are developing properly are being encouraged to participate in a Lanarkshire research project.

The Toddler Communication Project, run jointly by NHS Lanarkshire’s speech and language therapy department and Glasgow Caledonian University, is interested in learning how your child, aged from six months to two years, communicates with you.

NHS Lanarkshire speech and language therapist Anne McDade, said: “The project will monitor children’s communication at an important stage of their development and if any problems are identified will insure they are treated quickly.

“We can also offer advice and ideas to encourage communication development.”

Anne continued: “The project is open to all children in Lanarkshire between six to 18 months.

“All people need to do is complete a checklist every three months until your child is two years old.

“We will let you know if your child’s communication is developing as expected for their age.

“If the checklist shows that your child is not doing something we think they should be doing, we will then let you know and ask if you would like us to assess your child in more detail.”
