The Patient Rights Act will be implemented in Scotland from 1 October 2012 and will change the way in which services are accessed.
The new act means that all patients who are due to receive a planned operation will be treated within 84 days of agreeing to have their treatment. This is a legal requirement and will apply in our hospitals and also to some mental health services and day case treatments which are undertaken by a GP or dentist.
The Act also sets out what NHS Lanarkshire should do when patients are or become unavailable.
Patients will also be advised of the consequences of not attending appointments or refusing two offers of an appointment.
As a result NHS Lanarkshire has drafted a new Local Access Policy setting out how patients will receive treatment and appointments to reflect the changes introduced in the new Act.
Alan Lawrie, interim director of acute services, said: “We are keen to hear people’s views on the new policy and we want to ensure that we have clearly set out our responsibilities in terms of providing patients with fair access to treatment.
“This policy potentially affects every person in Lanarkshire so we would encourage people to share their views on this.”
