Work is progressing well with the new Caird House mental health residential care centre in Hamilton.

It is being created on the site of Beckford Lodge, in Caird Street, next to the existing Caird House building.

The new centre will have a total of 27 beds – 12 complex needs beds and 15 low secure care beds. This total includes 10 beds currently in the existing Caird House building, which has provided assessment, treatment and rehabilitation for adults with a wide range of complex mental health needs service since 1998.

The old Beckford Lodge building has now been demolished and work has begun on the new development. All design development work is now completed and the project is currently ahead of schedule.

The new facility is a key part of the Lanarkshire Mental Health Strategy which has been developed in partnership with South Lanarkshire Council, North Lanarkshire Council, voluntary organisations and other stakeholders.

The strategy focuses on recovery, recognising that most people with mental health problems can and do get better.

The development at the Beckford Lodge site is due to open in December 2010.
