20th March 2010 - Men’s Health Event

Event at Gowkthrapple Community Centre

“Men don't tend to look after their health as well as they should and are often reluctant to visit a doctor so we've decided to take services to men where it is most convenient."

North Lanarkshire Community Partnership is holding a Men’s Health event at Gowkthrapple Community Centre on Saturday 20 March 2010 from 10am – 2pm.

The free event aims to raise awareness of men’s health and wellbeing issues and is targeted at men in the Wishaw, Craignuek and Bellshill areas.

Lynn Adams, NHS Lanarkshire Health Promotion Officer, said: “Men don't tend to look after their health as well as they should and are often reluctant to visit a doctor so we've decided to take services to men where it is most convenient.

“The event is free and the information given is completely confidential. We hope the event will help raise awareness about health issues specific to men.”

On the day the Gowkthrapple Community Centre will be transformed into four separate zones offering advice and awareness sessions as well as family activities that are fun, interactive and geared for all ages.

Men attending on the day can receive a free health MOT, information and advice on diet and fitness, mental health and well being, help to quit smoking and confidential advice from trained advisors and volunteers.

Lynn added “Although specifically targeted at men the event has something for all the family.

“We have an outdoor fitness zone, beat the goalie, sumo wrestling and inflatable tennis.

“There will also be a wide range of free healthy snacks at the healthy eating zone and healthy eating demonstrations. All men who complete a men’s health questionnaire will be entered into a free prize draw to win a Nintendo Wii and other prizes.”

At the event, there will also be stress busting zone with various stall holders on hand to give information on training, employment and debt counselling. Men and boys could also benefit from a free haircut and complementary therapies.

Lynn concluded: “The North Lanarkshire Community Partnership want to encourage men and boys within Wishaw, Craignuek and Bellshill to take better care of their health and wellbeing and signpost them to services that can help improve their health.”
