Thrombolysis Service

Thrombolysis is a clot busting drug call Alteplase. Thrombolysis treatment is most beneficial if it is given as soon as possible after the stroke, and has to be given within four and a half hours of the onset of the stroke. For further information, please go to: Thrombolysis Treatment after Stroke.

Thrombolysis for acute ischaemic stroke is a hugely effective treatment. Across Scotland this intervention is only provided sporadically and there are large inequities in access. National guidance suggests that all stroke patients should have the potential (if appropriate) to receive this treatment, which can reduce disability and the need for institutional care. Some Lanarkshire patients do receive this treatment on an ad hoc basis through transfer to Glasgow, however, there are a number of reasons why this is not the optimal service model for the Lanarkshire population.

The Stroke MCN has developed a model where stroke thrombolysis can be provided within all stroke units in NHS Lanarkshire supported by a single consultant rota. Medical assessment/decisions can also be made via tele-consultation from consultants’ hospital base within the three Lanarkshire hospitals or from their own homes.
