How to Help with Voice Problems

  •  Encourage the child to stop shouting and raising their voice over background noise as this can cause the cords to become inflamed.
  •  Encourage the child to stop throat clearing and coughing as this irritates the vocal cords.  Try to encourage them to either throat clear very gently or take a sip of water.
  •  Children with voice problems will often have dry throats so encouraging them to drink water will help.
  •  Encourage the child to have regular voice rest periods where they do not speak e.g. 10 minutes but do not encourage them to stop talking completely as this is harmful to the vocal cords.
  •  A smoke-free environment is beneficial.
