Patient Journey

If you have a learning disability and have been referred to our service in order for your mental health or epilepsy needs to be assessed, you will be offered an outpatient appointment.

This might be in a clinic, at home or at a day centre/college/school and might take an hour or more. We might need to speak to your parents or carers to gather more information.

Once we have all the information we need, we can decide what your diagnosis is and recommend treatment.

We might suggest medication or help from another department or both.

If we start you on some medication, we will need to keep seeing you in the outpatient clinic to make sure the medication is working and it agrees with you.

Your follow-up appointments will last around 20 minutes.

Sometimes we keep seeing people even when they are well, as they are at risk of having the same illness return, but in the main if you get better and don’t need any more medication, or your medication is at a stable dose, we will discharge you back to the care of your GP.
