Heart Surgery - Introduction

Lanarkshire Cardiac Centre For Minor Heart Surgery

Lanarkshire has two Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratories (Cath Labs) at Hairmyres Hospital, where procedures to tackle heart disease such as angiography and angioplasty are carried out.

An angiogram is an x-ray examination of the heart and is used to assess the damage to the arteries in a patient’s heart. If significant damage is found the patient may be given a procedure called angioplasty, which involves stretching narrowed areas of the arteries to improve blood flow to the heart.

Cardiologists at Hairmyres can perform an angiogram and follow-up with an angioplasty (if required) on the same day. This means patients do not need to be put on a separate waiting list and can have all the necessary procedures completed during one visit to the hospital.

Each year the Hairmyres’ Cath Labs care for around 2500 Lanarkshire patients, around 40% of which are emergency admissions. In 2005, the Cath Labs team performed:

  • 1628 angiograms
  • 840 angioplasties
  • Fitted 77 pacemakers

The specialised team who work in the Cath Labs is made up of:

  • Six Cardiology (heart) Consultants (Dr Vallance, Dr Gilbert and Dr O’Rourke from Hairmyres, Dr Malekianpour and Dr Docherty from Wishaw General and Dr Pell from Monklands Hospital)
  • A wide range of highly specialised nursing staff, including a nurse dedicated to your care
  • Cardiac technical staff, who monitor a patient’s heart and carry out tests
  • Radiographers, who are responsible for carrying out x-rays
