Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT)

ABOUT

The Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Department provides a range of services across Lanarkshire. The unit works closely with the Maxillofacial Surgery Department and the Beatson Oncology Centre, diagnosing and treating head and neck cancer.

The unit has been centralised for inpatient treatment in Monklands Hospital since October 1997.

Outpatients and day surgery continues to be provided in Monklands, Hairmyres and Wishaw hospitals.

Some outpatient clinics, including ENT paediatric clinics, also take place in Central Health Centre, Cumbernauld and the Audiology Unit, Princes Gate Hamilton.
The department deals with a wide range of disorders of the ear, nose and throat.

In addition, the unit works closely with the Maxillofacial Surgery Department and the Beatson Oncology Centre, Glasgow, diagnosing and treating head and neck cancer.

ENT Outpatients

ENT outpatient clinics run in Monklands, Hairmyres, Wishaw and Stonehouse hospitals. To ensure you are given an appointment as quickly as possible you may be offered an appointment in any one of several locations.

The outpatient service has recently been part of a national redesign project which has introduced a number of new ways of working. These include nurse led services and the introduction of patient focused booking which has changed to the way appointments are made. These initiatives are designed to improve access to services and reduce waiting times.

Some ENT clinics also run in the Central Health Centre in Cumbernauld and the Audiology centre which is based in Hamilton. These are predominantly paediatric clinics.

ENT Inpatients

ENT inpatient treatment in Lanarkshire is based in Ward 9, University Hospital Monklands.

The unit has 26 ENT beds, 2 of which are designated ENT step-down beds.

The department provides a range of elective procedures from minor surgery to complex treatment for head and neck cancer. In addition, the ward receives ENT emergencies from across Lanarkshire 24 hours a day, all year round.

The department provides ENT paediatric surgery one week per month. During this time specialist paediatric nurses are available on the ward from the Paediatric Unit based in University Hospital Wishaw.

ENT Day Surgery

ENT Day Surgery takes place in Monklands, Hairmyres and Wishaw Hospitals.

Day surgery provides a range of procedures that do not normally require you to stay in hospital overnight

As with outpatients, you may be offered treatment in anyone of these sites to facilitate quick access to treatment.

The number of ENT procedures that can be done in this way is growing all the time.

Pre-assessment for day Surgery is provided by the pre-assessment services on each of the individual sites.

ENT Pre-Assessment

The Pre-Assessment clinic helps prepare you for your surgery, provides a range of information and gives you the opportunity to ask questions.

Once you agree to come into hospital for inpatient treatment you will be sent an appointment with a date and time of your Pre-Assessment clinic, and also a provisional date for your theatre admission.

It is very important you attend this appointment; failure to attend will result in cancellation or postponement of your operation.

If you are unable to attend please contact 01698 752424 for an alternative appointment time.

A number of staff are involved with the clinic including:

Nursing Staff:

Pre-Assessment Sisters will explain what is involved in your stay in hospital and any aftercare you may require.

They will take your medical history and may carry out some routine tests, such as height, weight, urine tests and blood tests.

They may also sent you for some tests you may require prior to you undergoing your anaesthetic such as heart tracing, chest x-ray and breathing tests.

Medical Staff:

As the ENT/Maxillofacial Pre-Assessment Clinic is run by nursing staff the doctor will not be seeing you at this clinic.

If it is felt you require to be seen by a member of the Medical staff arrangements can be made whilst you are at the clinic.

The anaesthetist is not normally at the clinic but if the nurse feels you require to be seen urgently she can call them to see you whilst you are at your appointment.

Where is the Clinic?

The ENT & Maxillofacial Pre-Assessment Clinics take place on Ward 9, University Hospital Monklands.

The clinics are held between 9am – 1pm Monday to Friday with some afternoon appointments on request.

The length of each appointment varies and depends on your health and which tests you require while you are at the clinic. Please allow between 30 mins and two hours.

What do I need to bring to the Pre-Assessment Clinic with me?

  • Medication you are taking at present, in the labelled boxes
  • A urine sample
  • You may wish to bring a friend or relative with you particularly if you are hard of hearing or are dependent on others for assistance
  • A list of questions you may have regarding your surgery, hospital stay and recovery
Tonsil Service

Tonsillectomy is a common ENT operation.

All patients between the ages of seven and 30 years old who are referred for tonsillectomy are now seen at the nurse led tonsil service, based in University Hospital Monklands. This service is run by Sister Mary Wilson.

At your appointment you will be assessed to ensure that you meet the criteria for tonsillectomy. This is done through the application of Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) (No 34), available on the website: www.sign.ac.uk

If you do meet the criteria you will be listed for surgery, pre-assessed and where possible provided with a date for your operation.

Ear Care Clinics

Nurse led ear care clinics have been established in Monklands, Hairmyres and Wishaw Hospitals as well as Central Health Centre, Cumbernauld.

Your GP needs to refer you to these clinics. The nursing staff have received advanced training on ear assessment and care and can provide treatment for a number of conditions including wax removal, otitis external and aural toilet.

The staff will also discuss with you measures you can take to avoid future problems providing general advice and guidance on maintaining good ear health.
