More about Wishaw

Breastfeeding Support Group

This is a self-help group where breastfeeding mothers and mothers-to-be can offer support and advice to each other.

The Group is facilitated by two Health Visitors each week who work in partnership with committee members. Any member of the Group is welcome to join the Committee at any time. Your interest and input would be much appreciated.

Facilitators are Eileen MacFarlane and Wilma Barnes, Health Visitors, NHS Lanarkshire who can be contacted at Wishaw Health Centre, Kenilworth Avenue on 01698 355511 (between 9.00 -10.00 am or 4.00 - 5.00 pm Monday- Friday).

Aims

To initiate, promote and support breastfeeding and sustain its duration to 6 months if possible, in an effort to enhance the health and well-being of both mothers and babies within, and surrounding, the Wishaw area.

Specific Objectives

Mothers will be able to apply acquired knowledge of the physiology of lactation to practice and recognise the benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and baby.
Mothers will be able to recognise and deal with common minor challenges which arise during breastfeeding.
Mothers will benefit from a supportive approach from both Health Professionals and peers, gaining confidence and self-esteem enabling them to make an informed choice regarding breastfeeding and health.

Monday Meetings

Meetings are always free of charge.

A light breakfast will be provided; choices vary upon mothers’ requests.

Toddlers are welcome to attend, if the group becomes busy on a weekly basis with toddlers we will provide a supervised play area. The responsibility for children in this play area remains that of the parents.

Domestic Support

The group can provide domestic support to new mothers.

Criteria for Domestic Support:

  • Must be a member of Wishaw Breastfeeding Support Group (ie attending on a weekly basis).
  • Ironing Service to support mums in the early days of Breastfeeding until your baby is approx 10 weeks old.
  • Priority given to mothers with, for example:

  • no relative available to provide support.
  • All support expenditure requires appropriate authorisation
  • Committee decision is final.
  • Criteria may be amended as need arises.
