More about East Kilbride and Strathaven
Welcome to the East Kilbride and Strathaven Breastfeeding Support Groups Webpage.
In our area we are very committed to supporting breastfeeding.
All breastfeeding mums need support to start breastfeeding and to continue for as long as possible. We recommend exclusive breastfeeding up to six months and thereafter as part of the baby’s diet beyond the baby’s first birthday as this offers additional protection for mothers against breast cancer.
Breastfeeding Support in East Kilbride and Strathaven
Routinely after discharge from the maternity you will be given written information about how you can contact your midwife or public health nurse at any time - office hours as well as several ‘out of hours’ contact numbers outwith the working day.
There are several Breastfeeding Support Groups (details below) organised by public health nurses. The main aim of these is provide help and support for breastfeeding mums in an informal setting as well as providing a great opportunity for mums to meet other mums and have a chat about how fantastic their new baby is! We will make you very welcome and you can pop in anytime between the times detailed.
EK Breastfeeding Buddies are volunteer mums who give of their time to help and support breastfeeding in East Kilbride and Strathaven. The Buddies have breastfed their own children, completed an NHS Lanarkshire Breastfeeding training programme and are registered volunteers.
Buddies are available to meet antenatal mums at the clinic to provide additional breastfeeding information. After leaving the maternity Buddies can support breastfeeding mums on a one to one basis at home or provide a friendly voice of encouragement on the phone. They would love to hear from you. Please contact Jean Gaston, the project co-ordinator, on 0797 962 0976 for more information.
If you are interested in becoming an EK Buddy yourself please let us know. Contact the co-ordinator on 0797 962 0976.
Thank you for visiting our webpage.
Keep on doing the best thing you can for your baby - BREASTFEEDING!
