Braveheart

Braveheart aims to improve heart health in Lanarkshire and prevent coronary heart disease, stroke and diabetes with the provision of health checks and advice.

Over half a million people in Scotland have coronary heart disease with 180,000 people requiring treatment for the condition. Small lifestyle changes could have a significant effect on the number of people who suffer and eventually die from heart disease.

Although the mortality rate for heart disease is decreasing, Scotland still exceeds the coronary heart disease mortality league for Western industrialised countries.

Lanarkshire has the poorest heart health record in Scotland. In 1999, 1503 people in Lanarkshire died of coronary heart disease. Over 2000 people suffered one or more heart attacks and there were nearly 900 news cases of angina reported.

Heart disease is preventable. If Lanarkshire people make small changes to their lifestyle, this could have a significant effect on the number of people who suffer and eventually die from this disease.

Braveheart work in partnership with local authorities, voluntary and community organisations, Healthy Working Lives Programme and local businesses to provide health checks in the community.

Braveheart nurses conduct health screenings and detect the symptoms or causes of potential coronary heart disease, cardiovascular and diabetes. Their job is to identify people most risk from heart conditions and help them to make the changes required for a healthier life.

The nurses provide information on smoking cessation, healthy eating, exercise, alcohol and weight management at local events.
