If you feel that you are not fit to travel to the hospital by car or public transport, please ask your GP if he or she would agree to you being brought to the hospital by ambulance.
Escorts are normally only allowed if:
- The patient is under 16 years of age
- Your GP identifies a clinical need to have someone accompany you.
Please let whoever is organising your ambulance know if:
- For any reason you no longer need transport
- You require any special arrangements. For example, if you are in a wheelchair and require a two-man ambulance crew.
The Ambulance service must be aware of any changes or special arrangements prior to the date of your appointment.
Due to the complexities of the Ambulance Service, it is not possible to give an accurate time for collection from your home, nor for your return.
For morning appointments, regardless of the time of your hospital appointment, you should be ready for pick-up by 8am.
For afternoon appointments, please be ready for pick-up by noon.
If you are expecting an ambulance and it does not arrive, please contact the person who arranged the ambulance (your GP or the hospital).
Please do not worry if for any reason the transport arrives at the hospital a little late for your appointment, as you will be seen as soon as possible after your arrival.
If you are early you may experience a wait but you will be seen in plenty time for your return journey.
A waiting area is available where you can wait for your ambulance for your return home.
After your first appointment, the hospital doctor will decide whether you continue to need to travel by ambulance. If you do, the hospital will arrange one for your next visit.
Please check with the receptionist when making your next appointment.
Please let us know if you no longer require an ambulance, or call the Freephone number on 0800 389 1333
