Your Views and Opinions

The hospital staff are firmly committed to providing the best possible treatment and care for you. The hospital is keen to improve what it does by listening to what you and your relatives have to say and would therefore welcome your comments on what you think was done well and where improvements could be made. Please feel free to speak to your named nurse. Most patients are satisfied with the service. However, the hospital would like to hear from you if you are unhappy about any part of it, whether it is with the catering, standard of cleanliness, the care you are receiving or something else. It is important that you let someone know as soon as possible, so please try to raise your concerns with hospital staff. For more information visit the Your Feedback section of this site.

History

The origins of Udston Hospital date back to 1879 when the Parochial Board of the Parish of Hamilton and the Police Commissioners of the Burgh of Hamilton jointly agreed to build and run the Hamilton Combination Hospital, specifically for the treatment of patients with Infectious Diseases.

With further building work undertaken in 1930, the hospital was extended to cater for more patients and was renamed as the Hamilton Fever Hospital.

The inception of the National Health Service in 1948 brought about a change in the type of patients treated within the hospital with a reduction in the number of those suffering Infectious Diseases and greater concentration on those requiring the treatment of Tuberculosis.

Major re-organisation of the Health Service in 1974 created a new name and function for the hospital. Lanarkshire Health Board became responsible for the operation of the services provided and the name was changed to Udston Hospital. Gradually, the facility began to cater for the needs of elderly, frail patients.

Further modernisation occurred in 1991 creating four 30 bedded wards and a Day Hospital. Avon and Douglas Wards provide long term care for elderly, dependent patients in pleasant surroundings. Brandon and Clyde Wards provide shorter term care and assessment facilities for older patients with a variety of mental health problems, especially those associated with Dementia. The Day Hospital is currently utilised to provide additional support and treatment for patients from within the local and surrounding community with impaired functionality as a consequence of Dementia.

A range of other services including Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Dietetics, Podiatry and Speech & Language Therapy is provided from the hospital on an outpatient basis.

Primarily caring for the older adult, Udston Hospital strives to offer its patients the very best of care and attention. Respect for and understanding of those whom we serve is fundamental to the approach that is taken in ensuring that these senior citizens, many of whom are completely dependent, continue to receive appropriate and committed support in a friendly and welcoming environment.
