Introduction

The Lockhart Unit is a 40-bedded care of the elderly unit for both male and female residents. Information leaflets are available for both patients and visitors are available for download.

Normally, admissions are made to the unit following a period of assessment and rehabilitation in the department of medicine for the elderly in Hairmyres Hospital. The consultant in charge of the Lockhart Unit is based in Hairmyres Hospital and visits Stonehouse Hospital weekly on a Monday.

There is emergency cover Monday to Friday, 8am-6pm supplied by the Avondale Medical Practice of GPs based in Strathaven. A doctor from the practice visits the unit every day – except Saturday and Sunday. Should you or your relatives at any time wish to discuss your condition or any aspect of your care with a doctor, please speak to a named nurse or nurse in charge of the unit who will be happy to arrange an appointment for you.

When you arrive, the hospital staff will settle you in and make sure that you are comfortable. They will show you the facilities in the unit and answer any questions which you have about your stay as fully as possible.

You will be given information to help you understand what is happening to you, and ensure you are involved in decisions that may need to be made about your care. Staff will respect your personal preferences and your religious or cultural requirements and will do their best to accommodate them whenever possible.
