Tops Tips

Alcohol and Drugs

Using alcohol and/or drugs can lower your inhibitions and you may do things you would not normally do. You may be more likely to get involved in sexual activity and more likely to forget about practising safer sex. Remember that any unprotected sex can carry the risk of infections and/or pregnancy. Try to stay aware of your sexual health at all times. Try to stay aware of your sexual health at all times.

Condoms

Get into the habit of carrying condoms with you all the time so they are available whenever you may need them. Condoms can prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections. They are also the only method of contraception which protect you from catching HIV. For more details on how to get free condoms visit the Lanarkshire Sexual Health website.

Don’t ignore your fears

Sometimes we may suspect we have an infection but ignore our fears. However, at times like this it is best to speak with someone who knows what they are talking about and who will not judge you. The staff at your local sexual health clinic are used to seeing people in a wide range of situations and can provide advice and, if required, treatment. Nearly all infections can be treated and the earlier they are, the easier they are to cure. If left untreated many infections will spread and cause more complications. They can also be passed on to any sexual partners.

Communication

Some people find it hard to talk about sex. Choose a time when both you and your partner are relaxed – not drunk, tired or already in the mood – to talk about safer sex.
