Breastfeeding Support Groups
Since breastfeeding rates are low in Lanarkshire, the health board set up breastfeeding support groups throughout the region.
All breastfeeding mums are welcome to these groups where they can meet with other mums and health visitors to socialise and also get support and advice.

Community Mothers
Community Mothers is a breastfeeding support programme which involves local mums as volunteers who provide support and encouragement to breastfeeding mothers in their own community.
The women are registered volunteers with NHS Lanarkshire and are recruited, trained and supported by midwives who co-ordinate the programme.
The volunteers help breastfeeding mums by:
- Providing breastfeeding information at ante-natal clinics and breastfeeding workshops.
- Supporting new breastfeeding mothers in the maternity unit at Wishaw General Hospital.
- Providing ongoing support to mothers following discharge home from hospital - either at home or over the phone.
- Supporting mothers with their breastfeeding at local community support groups.
- Contributing to the development and delivery of breastfeeding awareness in their own community e.g. in schools, breastfeeding groups and community events, with the project team and other health professionals.
- Following initial training, provide additional learning opportunities for volunteers.

Breastfeeding workshops
These sessions provide an opportunity to learn about the why, where and when of breastfeeding from a midwife and a local breastfeeding mum in a relaxed atmosphere with other pregnant women.
The workshops offer pregnant women the opportunity to ask questions about breastfeeding before they start.
Refreshments are provided throughout the session.
