NHS Lanarkshire continues to offer work experience for school pupils in both clinical and non-clinical areas throughout the organisation for S4-S6 school pupils.
As demand for work experience placements increases, NHS Lanarkshire are currently reviewing the opportunities available. In recognising the increasing need for more ‘experiential learning’, the organisation has identified the need for development of new, innovative approaches to support and provide placements that will meet the changing needs of school pupils.
Enabling work experience in a healthcare setting is complex so it’s important we get it right, and whilst we may not be able to offer an opportunity directly at this time, please keep in touch for further updates.
Work continues in designing and developing these approaches. We anticipate that this will continue to include access to work placements for S4, S5 and S6 pupils, a clinical careers event within a simulation environment being particularly useful for S4 pupils considering a clinical career and the continuing development of a medical careers programme for S5 and S6 pupils, enabling observing and shadowing clinical staff, gaining a valuable insight into the clinical world of work.
Please keep checking our website for further updates.
Work Experience in NHS Lanarkshire
It is essential to attract people to jobs and careers in tomorrow’s National Health Service (NHS). One effective way to achieve this is through providing school pupils with opportunities to interact with our organisation through work experience.
NHS Lanarkshire seeks to assist in the involvement and recruitment of S4, S5 and S6 school pupils from our local communities, through partnerships with our local education authorities (North Lanarkshire Council and South Lanarkshire Council).
By working in partnership with our local education authorities NHS Lanarkshire aims to provide an effective work experience for school pupils to gain an insight into working life, learning about themselves and the variety of career opportunities in a large public organisation.
Who Can Participate?
NHS Lanarkshire’s work experiences are aimed at S4, S5 and S6 school pupils.
All work experience is subject to availability.
Work experience for S4 school pupils provides an opportunity to experience working life in a non-clinical / non-patient area.
In the interest of protecting the people we serve, there are a number of areas which are not appropriate for work experience:
- Accident and Emergency
- Areas with critically unwell patients, e.g. High Dependency or Intensive Care Units
- Infectious Diseases Units
- Mental Health
- Midwifery or Gynaecology
- Terminal Care
- Patients’ homes
For those pupils considering a clinical career in healthcare we offer an insight to healthcare careers day which includes simulated sessions which will give an insight into clinical opportunities primarily within the Medicine and Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Profession.
